I researched a newspaper from Great Falls, Montana. Great Falls, Montana was founded in 1883 with a territory admission to statehood who returned with a friend and they built a
permanent settlement. Great Falls' population was about 1,200 in 1883 and was about 22,26 square miles. The semiweekly newspaper was published on May 18, 1887. This newspaper had news about people being executed and attorneys coming to town, but not much about political issues. Socialists were mentioned and someone was making a democratic newspaper. More issues, arrests, injured, and deaths were discussed in this paper rather than big political issues. Throughout the whole newspaper crime and scandal were discussed. Many people died from illness, being run over by cars, train crashes, buildings catching on fire, and lot jumping (people going on others property trying to destroy it to
hopefully get ownership over it). This newspaper was helpful to learn about the Great Falls community. This town is a lot like other western towns during this time. There was crime and illness just like other towns. There was also stories about attorneys moving in, socialists staying in a hotel, new businesses starting, and things happening to places in the town. Throughout reading this newspaper I saw the language used in the writing and found it interesting the certain words they used to describe things. For example a guy called the flag a rag and the police saved him from being "thumped". Its interesting to see how words evolve also how much the world has changed. Many people got run over by cars during the 1890's and now that doesn't happen very often. Also how big it was for attorney moving into town now we can go look around and be like "Oh that law firm must be new!" The details they put in the newspaper for their town was crazy detailed and the news we hear today is not. I got to have a look on how much our world has changed compared to the 19th century and learn what happened during that time.
